Photonics / Optics

Welcome to the ‘City of Lights’. Over 60 businesses at Adlershof are involved with photonics and optical technologies, with an emphasis on laser technology, medical laser technologies, optoelectronics, technical optics, electron beam and x-ray analytics.

A leader in Photonics and Optics

The Berlin-Brandenburg region is home to one of the most significant clusters for optics technologies in Europe. Many of these businesses are based at Adlershof, in the Photonics Centre’s six buildings, which comprise 17,000 square metres of lab and office spaces. Companies such as AEMtec, Astro- und Feinwerktechnik, Bruker AXS Microanalysis, First Sensor Technology, Jenoptic Diode Lab, LLA Instruments, greateyes GmbH und Laser Technik Berlin (LTB) are situated here.

The businesses are joined by the university and non-university research institutes, including Berlin Humboldt University’s Physics Institute, the Helmholtz Centre for Materials and Energy (Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie), the Leibniz Institute for Analytical Science (Leibniz-Institut für Analytische Wissenschaften, ISAS), the Max-Born-Institute for Non-Linear Optics and Short Pulse Spectroscopy (Max-Born-Institut für Nichtlineare Optik und Kurzzeitspektroskopie, MBI), the National Metrology Institute (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, PTB), the Ferdinand-Braun-Institute, the Leibniz-Institute for Microwave Technology (Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik, FBH), the  German Aerospace Centre (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR) and the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung, BAM).

A worldwide network of light

The specialist network OpTecBB e.V., promoted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), receives significant support from these Adlershof companies and institutes. Amongst its aims are the quick translation of research findings into marketable products, and training and further education. Adlershof is fast becoming one of the world’s leading sites for the research and development of light technologies. The entire supply chain is represented, from initial research, to highly specialised suppliers, to commercial high tech businesses supplying the mass market.

This portfolio of services is regularly presented at international trade fairs such as Laser Optics Berlin and Photonics West.
