Globally there have been a huge amount of resources invested in supporting research-oriented IT endeavours typified by e-Science, e-Research and e-Infrasructure/cyberinfrastructures. This talk will outline some of these efforts and highlight examples of successful and unsuccessful efforts that the presenter has been involved in covering multiple application domains (including the humanities, social sciences, geosciences, nano-sciences, health sciences and post-genomic biomedical sciences). The talk will identify some of the computing challenges in supporting current and future domain-specific collaborative research especially with regard to the ever-increasing data deluge and security.
Short overview of Professor Richard O. Sinnott
Professor Richard O. Sinnott was appointed as the Director, eResearch for the University of Melbourne in July 2010. He works in the Research portfolio and also holds an adjunct appointment in the Department of Computing and Information Systems, Faculty of Engineering. Prior to coming to Melbourne, Professor Sinnott was the Technical Director of the UK National e-Science Centre; Director of e-Science at the University of Glasgow and Deputy Director (Technical) for the Bioinformatics Research Centre also at the University of Glasgow. Before he went to Glasgow, Professor Sinnott ran his own consultancy company in the real-time telecommunications domain based in Berlin, Germany, building on the work he undertook whilst he was employed as a senior research scientist at GMD Fokus in Berlin.
