The German Society for Limnology (DGL) cordially invites you to its 41st Annual Meeting, which will take place from 14 to 18 September 2026 in Berlin. The first two days of the meeting will be held jointly with the Water Research Horizon Conference (WRHC) of the Water Science Alliance. Both events are organized by the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) in cooperation with Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
The well-known principle of the universal scholar Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716) of ensuring a close connection between scientific research (theory) and practical benefit (practice) is fully in line with the founding idea of the German Society for Limnology. It also reflects the urgent need to manage our aquatic ecosystems and water resources on a robust scientific basis. Among us, there is hardly any doubt that science and application must go hand in hand. Yet this raises key questions: How can we rapidly transfer existing scientific insights into practice, and conversely, how can we address acute problems arising from practice and society with appropriate research activities in a timely manner? The conference offers a platform to discuss these questions together.
As in previous years, contributions are expected not only to present cutting-edge scientific findings, but also to highlight proven and innovative solutions to practical challenges, to showcase successes, and to develop visions for the future. The more than twenty submitted proposals for special sessions underscore the strong interest in this professional exchange and at the same time reflect the thematic breadth of current limnological research questions, in which science and practice are closely intertwined.
The parallel Water Research Horizon Conference further broadens the program by adding additional perspectives. During the first two days, participants will be able to move freely between sessions of both events according to their interests. Plenary lectures, coffee breaks, and the get-together will be held jointly and will offer numerous opportunities for intensive and, we hope, inspiring exchange.
