“Tech and Spaces for Circular Economy”

Project period: April 2024 – December 2025

How can innovative technologies and spatial concepts advance the Circular Economy? The Tech and Spaces for Circular Economy project explores how key technologies such as optics, photonics, and materials science can enable sustainable solutions for industries like construction, electronics, and textiles.

At the same time, we analyse the spatial requirements for an innovation-promoting environment that fosters knowledge transfer, collaboration, and sustainable development.

The connection between TECH and SPACE is the key to successfully integrating circular economy practices into companies – in Berlin and beyond. Learn more about our project and the opportunities for your company!

Our Approach

The “Tech and Spaces for Circular Economy” project follows a three-phase approach:

PHASE I

Collecting the Dots

First, we analyze the ecosystem in Adlershof and identify innovative technologies and actors.

PHASE II

Connecting the Dots

Next, we bring the relevant actors together to develop new collaborations and business models.

PHASE III

Scaling the Dots

Finally, we share our knowledge and insights with our stakeholders to further strengthen the circular economy.

The Goal of “Tech and Spaces for Circular Economy”

weedezign / Adobe Stock

Our goal is to develop Berlin Adlershof into a leading location for the implementation of circular economy practices.

TECH: We are developing at least two concrete use cases that demonstrate how innovative technologies from the fields of optics, photonics, and materials science can advance the circular economy.

SPACE: We are demonstrating the spatial requirements for an innovation-promoting environment – from efficient land use to the integration of shared infrastructure.

By bringing together technology, spaces, and people, we are fostering a strong network of companies, research institutions, site managers, and political actors. In this way, we are developing new approaches to circular economy and making them accessible in a practical guide to support sustainable development in the long term.

Participating companies

Tech and Spaces for Circular Economy is a joint project of the two companies Creative Climate Cities and Circular City - Zirkuläre Stadt e.V. (Circular Berlin).

Creative Climate Cities is an agency for digital urban development. We work at the interface of urban development, climate adaptation, digitalisation and visual communication. We initiate and support transformation processes towards a resource-saving and liveable urban future. We connect technologies, spaces and people, drawing on interdisciplinary expertise from the fields of data strategy, urban planning, circular economy and innovation management. Our services are used by federal ministries, municipalities, public utilities, cooperatives and neighbourhood developers.

Circular City is an open, non-profit initiative that accelerates the transition of the Berlin metropolitan region to a circular economy. Through knowledge and community building activities, pilot projects and educational programmes, the local circular economy agenda is being shaped and material flows within the region are being redeveloped. Circular Berlin works very closely and primarily in cooperation with the Berlin Federal Ministries for the Environment and for Economic Affairs as well as with the local ecosystem of companies and start-ups involved in the local circular economy - focussing on sectors with high resource consumption and circular potential: textiles and fashion, construction, urban development, product and material design, technologies as well as food and biomass.
