Joachim Sauer has been elected an international member of the National Academy of Sciences
The US organisation has elected the former HU professor as an international member in recognition of his outstanding research
Every spring, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) elects new members. At the end of April, it announced in Washington the election of 120 new members and 25 international members. Among them is Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Dr. h.c. Joachim Sauer of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU), who has already received numerous awards for his research in the field of quantum chemistry and is also a member of the German National Academy Leopoldina. Sauer was Professor of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry at HU from 1993 to 2017 and has since continued his scientific work as a Senior Researcher at the Department of Chemistry at HU.
Membership of the prestigious NAS is regarded as one of the highest honours in science. With the newly elected members, the total number of active members rises to 2,705 and the total number of international members to 557, according to the NAS.

The NAS is a private, non-profit organisation established under a charter enacted by Congress and signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. It recognises scientific achievement through the election of its members and, together with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine, advises the government and other organisations on matters of science, technology and health policy.
