New greenhouse gas report identifies main sources of emissions at HZB
Research institute presents greenhouse gas inventory and certification for its energy management system
For many years, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) has been committed to resource-efficient research and working practices. The centre has set itself the goal of becoming greenhouse gas neutral by 2035. To this end, it regularly has its emissions recorded and verified in a greenhouse gas report. The new report for the reporting year 2024 has been reviewed through an external verification process and is now available. In addition, in July 2026, HZB received certification for its energy management system in accordance with the DIN standard.
The results of the greenhouse gas inventory
HZB’s total greenhouse gas emissions in 2024 amounted to 12,679 tonnes of CO₂e. Of this total, 83 tonnes of CO₂e were attributable to Scope 1, 886 tonnes of CO₂e to Scope 2 (market-based method) and 11,710 tonnes of CO₂e to Scope 3.
The largest emitters of emissions at HZB are:
- Procurement of scientific equipment: 40.5% of HZB’s total emissions
- Procurement of operational equipment: 9.5% of HZB’s total emissions
- General building structures: 8.9% of HZB’s total emissions
- Business travel: 7.5% of HZB’s total emissions
- Staff commuting: 7.5% of HZB’s total emissions
