New Master’s degree programme in Science of Materials launches at Humboldt-Universität

At the Adlershof Campus, Master’s students can gain qualifications in modern materials research

From the 2026/27 winter semester, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin will be offering a new English-taught Master‘s degree programme in Science of Materials. Applications can be submitted until 31 August 2026. The four-semester degree programme is aimed at Bachelor’s graduates from the natural sciences and related disciplines who wish to gain further qualifications in modern materials research. The first students will begin their studies in October 2026 at the Campus Adlershof for mathematics and natural sciences. Around 30 places are available for the first cohort.

Materials science is a key discipline of the 21st century, enabling solutions in the fields of energy, digital technologies, sustainability and health. The Master’s programme provides an interdisciplinary understanding of the entire materials development process – from the synthesis and characterisation of new materials, through simulations, to the development of functional systems – whilst also laying the foundations for innovation and spin-offs in materials research.

“Upon completion of the Master’s programme, graduates will be qualified for careers in research, industry or even Berlin’s start-up scene – one of the most dynamic start-up ecosystems in Europe,” says Prof. Dr Philipp Adelhelm from the Department of Chemistry at HU.

The programme complements Humboldt-Universität’s established natural science disciplines by offering an interdisciplinary perspective. It combines fundamental principles from chemistry and physics with modern methods of materials research, computer-aided approaches and machine learning.

“I am very much looking forward to welcoming the first cohort to my lectures next semester,” says Prof. Dr Eva Unger from the Department of Chemistry at HU.

Research insights at the Campus Adlershof

The degree programme is based at the Department of Chemistry at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Through collaboration with the Centre for the Science of Materials Berlin (CSMB), students gain access to an interdisciplinary research environment and the latest research questions in materials science. For example, students work on current research topics relating to new materials and manufacturing methods, sustainable energy storage, perovskite solar cells, and hybrid electronic and optoelectronic components.
