C₁ sells first technology licence for a biomethanol plant
Strategic partnership launched with leading Indian engineering company Thermax
C₁ Green Chemicals AG today announced a strategic agreement with India-based Thermax, a trusted partner in energy transition and a leading energy and environment solutions provider, to jointly develop a pre-commercial facility for the production of green methanol from syngas. The partnership is designed to leverage the complementary strengths of both organisations. The upcoming facility will utilize C₁’s proprietary, high-efficiency catalyst technology, combined with Thermax’s expertise in process engineering and system development. Through this joint effort, the partners bring a groundbreaking catalytic innovation to the Indian market, optimizing it for local industrial conditions.
“Our agreement with C₁ Green Chemicals AG aligns with our vision of advancing sustainable energy solutions through strategic, disciplined innovation,” said Santanu Chaudhuri, Chief Technology Officer, Thermax. “By combining C₁’s catalyst technology with our deep-rooted process development capabilities, we are taking an important step towards establishing a viable pathway for green methanol production in India. This pre-commercial facility will enable us to build the capabilities required for commercial scale deployment.”
Christian Vollmann, CEO, C₁ Green Chemicals AG, said, “We are excited to sell our first technology licence to Thermax. With its strong track record in building chemical plants, Thermax is an ideal partner to deploy C₁’s technology rapidly. As countries seek to reduce their dependence on fossil fuel imports, demand for locally produced, decentralized biomethanol is growing fast. Together with Thermax, we aim to scale C₁’s breakthrough methanol technology to meet this demand—first in India and, ultimately, in markets around the world.”

About Green Methanol
Green methanol is key to defossilizing several hard-to-abate industries. In shipping, green methanol is the most tangible carbon-neutral fuel alternative to oil. It can also be processed into sustainable aviation fuel and replace oil, gas and coal as a non-fossil carbon source in the production of carbon based products like adhesives, plastics, paints, insulation and coatings.
About C₁
C₁ develops new, climate-friendly chemical production processes by rethinking chemical reactions from the atomic level all the way up to the production scale. The chemical processes are designed with the help of quantum chemical simulations and implemented in proprietary production technologies. In doing so, the Berlin-based company develops and scales exclusively on the basis of renewable raw materials and energy. From the first steps in the development of a production process, all processes are designed to enable a closed carbon cycle. In this way, C₁ supports industry on its way to net-zero.
