Practical help with implementing sustainability demands

SOS Starter Kit supports small and medium-sized enterprises in operating in a more environmentally friendly manner

As micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) across Europe adapt to rising sustainability demands, the Erasmus+ Start on Sustainability (SOS) project is delivering new tools to facilitate this step. Supported by Steinbeis University and led in Germany through Global Impact Grid, SOS has launched a Digital Toolkit—the SOS Starter Kit—, designed to help small businesses integrate sustainability into their daily operations in a simple and practical way. The SOS Toolkit is designed to make sustainability easy to understand, focusing on resource conservation, balancing social and economic needs, and ensuring a positive legacy for future generations.

Since 2015, the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have guided global efforts to address challenges such as climate change and poverty. Small businesses are an essential part of meeting these goals, and while they face unique challenges, simple steps—such as improving energy efficiency and choosing sustainable suppliers—can have a significant impact.

Adopting sustainable practices not only benefits the environment but can also strengthen brand reputation, reduce costs, and attract eco-conscious customers. The SOS Toolkit offers straightforward, step-by-step guidance, practical tips, and real-life examples to make sustainability accessible to all business owners, regardless of size or sector.

It includes strategies to help reduce energy consumption, cut down on waste, and support local communities, along with case studies of businesses that have already embraced sustainability. These examples show how sustainable approaches can save money, attract new customers, and make a positive contribution while supporting business growth.

By breaking down barriers to sustainability, the SOS Toolkit positions small businesses to strengthen their operations, improve their bottom line, and prepare for the future.

The SOS Toolkit is available now as part of the Erasmus+ initiative:
