The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation honours the collaboration of Kookrin Char with IKZ and the Leibniz ScienceCampus GraFOx in the field of oxide semiconductors by a prestigious Humboldt Research Award. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation acknowledges with this award the excellence of the scientist but also the leading role of the host institution in this field.

Prof. Dr. Kookrin Char has been working in the field of oxide heteroepitaxy and heterostructures for 30 years. In particular, with his pioneering work on BaSnO3-based heterostructures, he is one of the internationally recognized leading pioneers in the promising field of oxide electronics. He is now being honored with the Humboldt Research Award for this work.

Mr. Kookrin Char is university professor and director of the Institute of Applied Physics at Seoul National University (Korea). He has been working closely with the IKZ for many years in the field of oxide materials. Several publications have resulted from this joint research work. Within the framework of the cooperation “BaStet – Barium stannate based heterostructures for electronic applications”, which is funded by the Leibniz Association, the partners are working on new and promising material systems for ferroelectric field effect transistors for information and communication technology. With their wide range of physical properties, the underlying oxide materials are particularly suitable for the development of novel electronic components and energy applications. Their properties can be specifically modified so that they can be insulating, semiconducting, metallic and superconducting, as well as piezoelectric and ferroelectric. They can be found in solar cells, touch screens or data storage devices, for example. The Leibniz ScienceCampus “Growth and Fundamentals of Oxides (GraFOx) for electronic applications” — where the IKZ takes a leading role — combines the activities and competences of its partner institutions in the field of oxide research and pursues the goal of optimally exploiting the application potential of oxides.

The research award enables Prof. Char to spend another research period at the IKZ, where both partners can further intensify their joint research activities.

About Kookrin Char

Prof. Dr. Kookrin Char has been a professor since 2008 and director of the Institute of Applied Physics at Seoul National University in Korea since 2020. He authored and co-authored more than 180 papers in the area of superconducting, magnetic, dielectric and semiconducting materials and devices. His papers have been cited more than 11,900 times in total and his h-index is 60 according to Google Scholar. He is a Fellow of the Korean Physical Society and of the American Physical Society. His latest research in the 2DEG development using BaSnO3 thin films has been attracting significant interest in the oxide electronics field.

About Humboldt Research Award

Every year, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants up to 100 Humboldt Research Awards to internationally renowned academics from abroad in recognition of their entire academic record to date. Academics whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and beyond and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge academic achievements in future are eligible to be nominated for the award. In addition, award winners are invited to conduct a research project of their own choosing in Germany in close collaboration with a specialist colleague. The award amount totals EUR 60,000.
