Campus Club: Future talks! "Careers with Impact: Working in a NGO"

Tuesday, 10. December 2024 // 16.00 - 17.30

WISTA Management GmbH

Rudower Chaussee 24, 12489 Berlin
a:head area Adlershof

Are you a PhD or Postdoc in STEM looking for a career path that combines innovation, impact, and real-world change? Then this Future talk edition is for you!

Besides business and industry, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in particular offer valuable job perspectives for researchers: With their unique blend of research & innovation, policy making, technical expertise, project management, interdisciplinary collaboration and practical application NGOs are an attractive option for STEM researchers looking to make a meaningful impact in their careers.

In this session, we focus on the transport and mobility sector: This sector is not only technologically advanced but also crucial for addressing climate change, making it an attractive option for those seeking to apply their skills to real-world challenges. Benjamin and Bernhard will talk about their motivation for choosing an NGO as an employer, about their day-to-day work, but also about the challenges that this profession entails and how to manage the balancing act between your own expectations and the reality of standing up for climate change.

Our aim is to give early career researchers concrete perspectives through this informal way of introducing interesting people and to bring together people from different disciplines and encourage further co-operation.

Book your spot here for the upcoming Campus Club Adlershof – Future talks!

Featured guests at the upcoming event

  • Dr. Benjamin Stephan, Team Lead Transport & Mobility at Greenpeace
Benjamin Stephan studied political science in Hamburg and UC Berkeley and completed his doctorate on international climate politics at the University of Hamburg. From 2014 to 2017, he was a research associate at the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) and advised the German government on climate protection, urbanization and sustainable urban development. Since March 2017, he has been campaigning for the transport transition at Greenpeace as a campaigner for transport and climate change. He has been heading the transport team since 2024.
  • Dr. Bernhard Knierim, Officer for transport policy and projects at Allianz pro Schiene
"Bernhard Knierim holds a PhD in biophysics and has done research on the vision process and bioenergy. At the same time, he was always interested in politics and has been part of several campaigns on sustainable transport and against railway privatisation. Considering the necessity of political change, he decided for politics as his main job, got another degree as Master of Public Policy and has worked as a member of the German parliament. At the moment he works for Allianz pro Schiene, an NGO for sustainable traffic, and voluntarily for Back on Track, a network to shift to long distance rail in Europe."

We welcome any questions throughout, and we invite you to remain after the talks, as there will be an opportunity to talk and network over light refreshments.
