Neighbourhood concepts for more sustainable mobility

Reiner Lemoine Institut and Localiser are planning charging infrastructure at HOWOGE locations in Berlin

RLI and Localiser RLI GmbH are supporting the housing association HOWOGE in a project to develop neighbourhood concepts for more sustainable mobility in Berlin. In this context, a new subproject started in March: RLI scientists analyse needs and potentials for private and public charging infrastructure (LIS) for the HOWOGE locations. The subproject is to be completed by June 2023.

HOWOGE sites are often centrally located and conveniently situated. Different user groups, such as tenants and external charging customers, could supply themselves with energy for e-vehicles at private or publicly accessible charging points there. To better plan this project, the RLI project team is studying potential and demand at the sites, the sizing of charging points, possible operating models, and issues related to reporting and permitting procedures.

“The expansion of LIS to supply a growing fleet of e-vehicles is an important task for the design of a climate-neutral transport sector in Berlin. With our analyses and calculations, we are helping HOWOGE to make an important contribution to climate-friendly mobility in the capital,” says Jörn Schirok, project manager and research associate in the research area of mobility with renewable energies at RLI.

Charging needs by usage group and location

The basis for creating the concept is the charging needs of the different user groups on site. These decide which LIS must be set up at the respective HOWOGE locations and which investment and operating models are required for this. In order to determine the type and scope of the required LIS, the project team forecasts how much energy will be charged per year at the respective locations per power class of charging points.

Contribution to climate-friendly mobility of the future

HOWOGE can use these findings when bidding for LIS expansion projects. On the one hand, the housing association plans to set up LIS to supply its tenants and, on the other hand, to use the great potential of its sites to supply additional charging customers.
