Photonic Systems for Quantum Information and Physical AI

The hardware limitations of conventional electronics — in deep learning as well as in secure communication and computing — have spurred explorations into alternative architectures that process information in the optical and quantum domains. This talk introduces the building blocks of such systems: photonic integrated circuits, artificial atoms such as color centers in diamond, and programmable optical processors. Building on these, I will describe architectures for quantum networking and modular quantum computing based on chip-integrated spin qubits, and then turn to “physical AI”: optical and quantum-optical signal processing for machine learning, including scalability and performance metrics — throughput, energy consumption, and latency — hardware error correction, in-situ training methods, and initial field trials, with extensions to machine-learning inference on quantum signals using reversible, quantum-coherent resources.
